Can copy 4 greenhouse gas names; two facts regarding average greenhouse gas emissions from Australian houses; and lists actions they can undertake to decrease their household emissions.
Can recall 4 greenhouse gas names and provide a fact about each; copies facts from the black balloon advert including average Australian greenhouse gas emissions and can list ways they can decrease their household emissions.
Presents the sources of 4 greenhouse gases and facts including the source of each gas; classifies each statement from the black balloon advert as fact or fiction and provides average Australian greenhouse gas emissions, including numerical values for each action they can take to decrease their household emissions.
Greenhouse gases explained including sources, structure and effect on Earth’s atmosphere; references factual statements for each from the advert; provides numerical relationships between desired actions to decrease their households average emissions of greenhouse gases.
Presents recommendations to Australian households and industry to decrease their greenhouse gas emissions
using referenced information.
2
Can place labels given in the correct sequence for the Carbon Cycle and the Greenhouse effect; participate and record their journey in the Carbon Cycle game; match the correct definition with each term provided.
Can place labels in the correct sequence for the Carbon Cycle and greenhouse effect and list 6 sources of Carbon on Earth; can describe an action that could disrupt the Carbon Cycle; can match the correct definition, term and image provided.
Can explain the Carbon Cycle explaining at least 6 conversions of Carbon on Earth and how an action can disrupt each of the 6 sections from the Carbon Cycle game; draw and explain the greenhouse effect and the danger of increased greenhouse gases; can provide an overview of the Kyoto Protocol and the cause and effects given for Climate Change including skeptics views.
Can explain the relationship between the Carbon Cycle and the greenhouse effect with particular mention of increased greenhouse gas emissions; can describe the various positions on the Climate Change debate.

UNIT OVERVIEW:

This is a mini-unit that will run for only TWO weeks.

You will ANALYSE information presented to you and QUESTION its scientific content for validity.

Topics you will explore include:
  • The Greenhouse Effect
    • greenhouse gases
    • possible effects of greenhouse gas emission
    • everyday usage of greenhouse gases in our homes
  • Climate change
    • differing viewpoints towards climate change
    • possible causes and effects of climate change
    • the Kyoto protocol
  • Carbon cycle
    • movement of carbon on and around Earth
These three areas of study interlink and allow greater understanding of this complicated and highly controversial issue.

ASSESSMENT:

All students will submit a double-page of information relevant to the three topics.

Details will be provided below for each level of demonstrated learning....
